Second Annual Books are for Lovers!

Booksareforloversbanner

It’s that time again… last year I had a dream. In the wake of Borders closings and the little part of the book world that died with it, I wanted people to stand up and let the book industry know that we still love brick-and-mortar stores. And so I started a little baby initiative called Books are for Lovers.

The idea is simple: Buy a book for yourself on Valentine’s Day. Buy it from a brick-and-mortar store.

In the wake of Barnes and Noble’s announcement that they plan on closing 1/3 of their stores over the next ten years, this feels just as needed this year as it did last year, if not more.

Last year I got about 100 people to commit to buying a book on Valentine’s Day. Also, join the facebook group! 🙂

Updated list of giveaway items!

Author Carolyn Frank has generously offered the following:

  • A print copy of Promises (middle grade)
  • An ebook copy of Hunter (picture book)

Author Angie Lofthouse has also contributed:

  • A print copy of Covenant (adult religious science ficiton)

I will personally be donating a $10 gift card to either Barnes and Noble OR the local Indie bookstore of your choice (so long as you can order a giftcard from them online). AND a .pdf copy of Tales From the Hollow Tree: Volume One, an anthology of Hollow Tree stories by myself and Isabelle Santiago.

And finally, we have a special offer of an eARC of Nichole Giles‘ soon-to-be-released Young Adult novel Descendant, due out May 1st of this year from Rhemalda Publishing (though it will take a little bit to get this one to you!):

Seventeen-year-old Abigail Johnson is Gifted.

Blessed—or cursed—with Sight and Healing, Abby lives an unsettled life, moving from place to place and staying one step ahead of the darkness that hunts her. When she arrives in Jackson, Wyoming, she is desperate to maintain the illusion of normalcy, but she is plagued with visions of past lives mixed with frightening glimpses of her future. Then she meets Kye, a mysterious boy who seems so achingly familiar that Abby is drawn to him like he’s a missing piece of her own soul.

Before Abby can discover the reason for her feelings toward Kye, the darkness catches up to her and she is forced to flee again. But this time she’s not just running. She is fighting back with Kye at her side, and it’s not just Abby’s life at stake.

That is a total of five books you could win, along with a $10 gift certificate!

If you want to participate, comment below, and let me know that you’ll be buying a book on V-Day! I’ll enter you into the drawing… 🙂

Also, if you would like to check out our contributors’ websites or add their books to your Goodreads, please check out the links above, and feel free to give them a shout-out!

Books are for Lovers, Report! And Giveaway!

Happy Valentine’s Day, lovelies! First of all, can I say a big THANK YOU to the people who’ve decided to take up this mini crusade with me? Between facebook, ravelry and twitter, I had about a hundred people tell me that they were going to buy a book today to support their local bookstore. I’m hoping that this means that there were others who saw this and decided to participate but didn’t feel like leaving a comment. It may seem like a small number when you think about the internet, but it was more than I could have hoped for being an unpublished writer with limited influence. Thank you so much for all of you that heard my idea, got excited about it and took action. It means more to me than I can say.

Okay, now on to the fun. Time to report!

I’d love it if you could tell me in the comments:

1) What book you bought today.

2) Where you bought it.

3) Why you chose that book.

And anything else you’d like to share!

I want to scrape together a giveaway for someone who participated, but funds are tight right now, so how about a few handmade bookmarks?

Leave a comment about the books you bought either here or on facebook, and I’ll send a hand-crocheted or hand-knit bookmark to three people who participated.

And again, thank you, thank you, thank you.
